What is a Chipotle Pepper?

Fun fact: there isn’t actually a pepper species called the “chipotle”. We know what you’re thinking, “but wait, how can that be? Has my favorite Tex-Mex chain been lying to me?”. Fear not, friend, we can help you make sense of it all. The chipotle is actually a variation on the jalapeno. To make chipotle peppers, farmers leave the jalapeños on the vine until they turn bright red, then put them through a smoke-drying process that produces their signature spicy-smoky-scrumptious flavor. And in case you were curious, this smoke-drying and devouring process was around way before the burrito bowl supergiant of the same name.

How Hot is a Chipotle Pepper?

The chipotle peppers range 5,000 - 8,000 SHU on the Scoville Heat Scale. While they definitely pack some heat, they are typically considered to be among the more family friendly end of the pepper spectrum with most chipotle pepper products classified as “mild” or “medium”. You can leave your hazmat gear at home with this one, but do proceed with caution.
